AOIT Internship

The YMCA offers a wonderful opportunity to work with different types of people. Everyone is beyond friendly to each other and we all get along so well because we all have the same end goal of just being able to make a difference in someones life even if it means doing something small. We all get along and do our best to have a fun. Obviously some days are harder than others, there were a few times where I had to come earlier or stay later to assist in problems that we had that day but at the end of the day its all rewarding. The fact that my boss took me having another job into consideration and let me come in at anytime i was available was amazingly kind of her because she didn't have to do that.  The YMCA has given me a sense of community and a fun environment to work with a company that brings so much joy into other peoples lives. And as I said before, everyone should have a chance to volunteer, work, or even just talk to someone who works at the Y because the YMCA is just a fan...

Reflection      When working at the YMCA, nothing can ever be expected to go exactly as planned. Many problems come up such as kronos wont work so I would have to check the kids in by hand, or one of the flash drives would out of know where just stop working, or even the excel sheets wouldn't save. So in these situations I would handle it any other way I would handle other problems. I would just start over with out causing a fit over my item not saving because I mean there wouldn't be anything I could do about it, but to assist the problem. Freaking out over computer issues like that wouldn't make anything any better so I had to handle it calmly. Being calm in any problematic situation can and will be helpful no matter if you're at school, a job, or by yourself.

Reflection     Through my experiences of working at the YMCA, I have learned that I couldn't be able to work with kids as my full time job. This internship has shown me that I need to be actively doing work at all times. As I begin to think about my career, I will definitely examine all of my possibilities. As i advance and grow in life I will become approached with many opportunities and I will continue to feel stronger about my career options. Although I did enjoy being able to come in at any time.

Reflection This internship kind of had an effect on my college/career plans, because going into it I felt as if I wanted to actually work at the Y to eventually become a CEO or someone high up there, but doing this internship I realized that I don't want to work with kids and that I need something more intense.  I will certainly continue to work at the Y as a side job or something to do when I get home from college or on the weekend, but definitely not as a main job. I am appreciative of the skills that it has taught me, but In the future I would like to work for a bigger company with more tasks that need to be done.

Reflection     During my internship, my duties never really changed because at the beginning of the internship my boss Grace gave me a list of what needs to be done throughout the internship. That being said, if i would have stayed longer I probably would have gotten more responsibility which would have been nice.

Reflection     In my opinion I feel as if working at any YMCA is such a great opportunity. To be able to be involved with children's lives, and to be able to have a job where all you do is give back and encourage people is just an awesome thing everyone should experience in their life at some point. So for me being able to intern at the Y is such a great learning experience. Being able to make the schedules and upload memories on websites is such a great feeling because being apart of the kids lives is what they need and picking activities for them that help them build a "healthy spirit mind and body" is essential for them to live a happy and healthy life. So all of that being said, I am most proud of being able to be apart of their lives because i remember how much my YMCA counselors were in my life when i was younger, so hopefully they will remember me.

Reflection    This internship is very enjoyable and more fun than I thought it would be. I had imagined that everyone was going to be serious all the time and that if I messed up I would get in trouble (because that's how I thought working with grown ups would be), but they were all very supportive because the YMCA is pretty much one family. I also expected the work to be more challenging, but it was very simple which is a good and bad thing. I wish i was challenged more because that's how you grow in a workplace, but i'm kind of glad that they let it be easy so I'm not stressed 24/7. I was expected to plan and carry out activities that the counselors don't always know if it will go smoothly or as they had hoped so I learned that its always helpful to have backup plans so that I could have control of the situations.

Reflection    Being in class allowed me to show respect for teachers and the school. This allowed me to show respect in any area I work within a school like the elementary school and the Kraft YMCA office. The skills provided can include working with others and having good communication  skills. Throughout this internship, it would've been helpful if I knew before hand how difficult it could be at times to work with kids. They're very crazy at times and also very moody. It would have also been beneficial if I learned how to use excel, because of the work i had to put in the spread sheets (i obviously eventually figured it out!).

Reflection     The Atmosphere for the YMCA was pretty mellow because everyone was in their own office or cubicle minding their own business, but the only problem was that all of the offices were under the second floor which contained all of the workout equipment so it would get pretty loud sometimes when someone would drop a weight, Sometimes their would be days where other employees would bring us food, and we would eat together so that was nice too. Our supervisor, Grace was in charge and gave us our daily plans. I really enjoyed working in the office because plans were made together and as a team. The atmosphere at the actual elementary school where i had the responsibility to clock kids in and out was actually very hectic. We would provide games for them and everyone would be socializing.   Reflection:         My internship was through the Kraft YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association). The YMCA has many aspects and many different jobs that they offer. They are a nonprofit organization and they do a lot of charity programs such as 'We Build People' which focus' on raising money for families and for children to be able to go to summer camps. "The Y connects people of all ages and all backgrounds together and they mobilize local communities to affect lasting, meaningful change".     During this summer internship I will be making and finalizing daily activities for the kids at an after school program. Doing this means that I research activities that the kids can do and I put them in a spread sheet determining which ages can do which activities.
